It's not just for the Bronx Beat anymore y'all. I was so relieved the Mets weren't playing today that I forgot that the Astros were playing this afternoon...I would have loved an afternoon listening to Milo on the radio...
So, I'm working late and finally grew tired of my awesome 80s playlist on youtube (however, I'm NOT tired of listening to UB40 and REO Speedwagon)...switched to ESPN Radio for some Baseball Tonight. BAM. Want to know how many runs the ASTROS scored? 0. The last time the Astros started out 0-7, I WAS STILL LIVING IN HOUSTON, TX! When I see Goose Egg after goose egg in the box score...I can't help but think about this.
Okay- now, that I've made my sarcastic, funny-in-my-own mind comments about my beloved Astros, I have to go back to being Staci. Staci, who NEVER boos her team (except for Aaron Heilman)...Staci who once loved a Mississippi State football team during the Rockey Felker years...Staci who really believes fans can will their team to victory. It's too early in the season for me to think about next year. I plan entire half years around baseball schedules...I don't have the energy to come up with a back-up plan. Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle is the Rick Cleveland of sports in Houston. Yes, he's rocking the kool-aid, but he's also a fan...and as I suspected, he had an amazing post today. An excerpt:
If you're bailing out on the Astros after one week, that's on you. I'm remaining in their corner.
I beg you not to give up on these kids in their hour of need. This is the time to show you care, and the way you do that is by buying more tickets, merchandise, souvenirs, etc.
When the 1988 Orioles returned home with a 1-23 record, you know what happened? They sold out Memorial Stadium.
That's what real fans do. They let their boys know they care, and just because the Astros have had a couple of problems with hitting, pitching and fielding is no reason to give up.
I'm going to recommend the Justice article to my Mets fans friends too...we are all so quick to be witty, sarcastic, and overly analytical sometimes pitch by pitch...we should leave the boo'ing to the Phillies fans who will take care of that for us when the Mets visit Philly (or the Phillies infiltrate Citi)...I get to see my Metsies next month...and I can't wait!
